FRIDAY 22nd JANUARY – UPSTAIRS at DQ

TAYO (Fabric // Cool & Deadly // Soul Jazz)

JACK OPUS

ANDY H

Mr. SHANKS

TIMMY DUTCH

JANUARY SALE! ONLY £4 OTD!

There really can’t be a better way to kick off SUCKERPUNCH in 2010 then with FABRIC resident DJ, TAYO: a champion of BASS music for over ten years.

His night ‘Cool & Deadly’ started life in 2007 as a club night at Fabric and has since gone on to host it’s own tent at the Glade festival.

The opening remit for the project was to explore music where “The backbone is dub and the body is bass”.

Guest DJ’s alongside Tayo have included the likes of Digital Mystikz, Skream, Oris Jay, Drop The Lime, Iration Steppas, Freq Nasty, Buraka Som Systema, and Trojan Sound System.

He’s also had radio shows on both BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra.

His “Fabric Live 32” mix was the winner of ‘Best Compilation’ at DJ Mag’s Best Of British Awards.

One of the original pioneers of breakbeat Tayo started Mob Records in 2000, one of the first breakbeat labels and early home for the Stanton Warriors, and released classic records by artists like Rennie Pilgrem, and Beber & Tamra, as well as the first Plump DJs mix album.

His sets now take in everything from dub reggae, breaks, garage, dubstep, jungle and beyond – if the bass is big enough to rattle your ribcage, this guy’s sure to be rocking it.

Support on the night comes from steel city bass soldier Jack Opus, and the Suckerpunch DJ team.

I don’t know what it is about Bristol and Dubstep producers but here’s yet another fellah doing them proud. His distinctive sound is a smooth blend of dubstep, DnB and breaks. It may sound like a hectic time but it’s far from it, think burial without the uniform drum loops. Enjoy!

PROVIDING THE BASSWEIGHT…
FRIDAY 20TH NOVEMBER
DQ, FITZWILLIAM ST., SHEFFIELD.
11PM ‘TIL LATE. JUST FIVER OTD.

REDLIGHT (CLIPZ)

STOATY(TUESDAY CLUB)

MR SHANKS + TIMMY DUTCH + KROOK KID

Let’s get rrrrrready to rrrrrrrumble!

The artist formerly known as CLIPZ unleashes his new guise, REDLIGHT on Sheffield for the first time!

DJ Clipz has evolved considerably as an electronic music artist over the last decade. It all started with his ‘Mystic Amen’ jungle smash in 2001; he slid down the ‘Slippery Slopes’ around 2005, and now in 2009 the man has created a new genre which is getting support all over the globe. This player could well represent “world cup” of electronic music, because every four years he comes around with a new game.

So what exactly is Redlight? “I’ve been wanting to do something new for a while now,” says DJ Clipz’ alter ego. “I’ve always been into various styles of dance music and this year felt like the right time to start releasing something different. I need to push myself and feel like I’m moving forward. Creating a new sound with a new name is a way of doing that.”

Sub Focus is influenced by minimal techno; DJ Fresh by electro house; but Redlight’s brain food is difficult to categorise precisely. “It’s brand spanking new baby!” Redlight beams. “I don’t want it to get pinned down; but it varies and spans a few different tempos. There’s definitely a lot of different influences, from acid house, techno, hip-hop, jungle, hardcore, ragga … and even country & western?”

Redlight’s sense of humour has been transferred intact from his Clipz doppelgänger. “The biggest tune so far?” Redlight throws a question into the ether. “The track getting the most hype at the minute is defo ‘Feel so Good (Wine Up Your Body)’ featuring Zaniah, Dread & Redskin. It’s receiving some major support from Skream, Goldie, Rusko, Toddla T, Chase & Status and Jack Beats. The track’s a proper old-meets-new thing! It’s going to be on the forthcoming ‘Lobster Boy E.P’, which I’m putting out in November hopefully.”

We’re guessing that Redlight has gelled with some cool artists, working this new style. “Yeah, me and Toddla T are doing a couple of bits at the minute, and there’s a track with Jenna G and Jammer on the E.P too. I can’t reveal anything else until my future collabos are finished…”

What kind of DJ sets does Redlight build around his styles? Does he ever bridge the drum & bass/tech punk genres together? “I’m just trying to make all different kinds of sounds that I’m feeling, but they’re all roughly around the same tempo so I can put them into my DJ sets.”

What kind of feedback has Red Light been hit with? “I’ve been getting positive words from many people I respect, so I’m happy about that, but at the end of the day, I’m doing this thing for me, to push myself forward and create new vibes and sounds in the studio, and for the clubs…”

FRIDAY 16th OCTOBER @ DQ, FITZWILLIAM ST.
11PM ‘TIL LATE.

DJ FRESH (Breakbeat Kaos)

VANDAL (LOT49)

ANDY H + TIMMY DUTCH + TJRM (SUCKERPUNCH)

+ MORE!

Just £5 on the door

After last month’s breakbeat epic from Napt and Mark Ross we return with another night of hip hop, house, breaks & drum and bass – get ready for the SUCKERPUNCH!!!

DJ FRESH is one of the founding members of legendary DnB outfit BAD COMPANY (alongside D-Bridge, Maldini & Vegas). He set up the Breakbeat Kaos label with Adam F which later signed little know aussie trio PENDULUM.

With a new album in the pipeline, FRESH’s recent releases ‘HEAVYWEIGHT’ and ‘HYPERCAINE’ have been smashing floors and airwaves all over the shop.

VANDAL was the first guest artist to appear at SUCKERPUNCH and is still one of our favourite DJs to have played the night.

Vandal is not one to mess around when it comes to builds and dropping bangers. His supercharged sets are perfect for dark, raging clubs, one of the reasons he repeatedly plays Fabric. It’s great to have him back at Suckerpunch.

Support comes from the usual Motely Crew of residents and some special guests, spread across TWO FLOORS of bigness…

Friday’s gunna be a right club bangaaa!

SUCKERPUNCH RETURNS…

FRIDAY 18TH SEPTEMBER

DQ, FITZWILLIAM ST. SHEFFIELD.
JUST FIVER OTD!

NAPT (4 x BREAKSPOLL WINNERS)
MARK ROSS
(URBAN GORILLA)
TIMMY DUTCH + MR SHANKS + ANDY H

NAPT are THE most exciting thing in breaks right now, beating the likes of Stanton Warriors, A-Skillz, Plump DJs and Evil Nine at the recent Breakspoll awards to take home three trophies including best producer, track and remix.

They’ve also been awarded best breaks track by Beatport, the dance music download site.

NAPT consistently tear up dancefloors from here to Timbuktoo with their trademark melee mixing – double dropping, cutting, scratching and crowd hyping.

Just listen to their mix in the links below for a sample of just how good they are. THIS WILL BE BIG!

We also welcome back the man who first brought the breaks sound to Sheffield with the awesome Urban Gorilla night – Mark Ross. He’ll be gettin you nicely locked in the groove from the off alongside the usual Suckerpunch motley crew.

That’s enough chat – listen to the mix ( Just click the play button in the links below )!!!!

Flute samples remixed a la drum and bass. Apparently the sample came from some advert with Ronaldinho, anyways the point is it’s worth a listen plus the stop motion video’s pretty cool too! The German producer J-Cut has some more liquidy DnB on his myspace which is pretty chill. Get it here!

Steel City Smackdown

FRIDAY 17TH APRIL @ DQ, FITZWILLIAM ST. SHEFFIELD.

M.I. LOKI (Tricksta)
JONNY TOWNSEND vs. MARK ROSS (Urban Gorilla)
NEW.JACK.CITY (Bigger than Barry)
ANDY H (The Tuesday Club)
CLIPBOARD (First Word Thursdays)

After storming sets from VANDAL and the DRUMATTIC TWINS at our previous events, we open up the floor for a royal rumble with a Steel City Smackdown!  M.I. Loki make serious waves with their awesome Tricksta label, putting out amazing breaks and dubsteppy tunes and generally bringin the heavy noise in their sets. With a nomination for Best Breakthrough Producer at Breakspoll under their belts, they’ve continued to please ears and feet wherever they go.

Mark Ross & Jonny Townsend have been integral to the development of the dance music scene in Sheffield over the last decade through the amazing Urban Gorilla night. Tonight they’ll be going head to head in a versus set that’ll cause guaranteed dancefloor devastation.  New.Jack.City has recently become one of the Sheffield fam, having branched out from Brum with the Bigger Than Barry mob. He’s one bassy badass.  Andy H should need no introduction, legend of The Tuesday Club and easily one of the best DJs you’ll see.

He’ll be assisted by his First Word Thursdays tag team partner Clipboard, playing meaty beats.  Pound for pound, this is set to be a musical rukkus you’re gonna want to get stuck right into.

Let’s get rrrrrready to rrruummmmmble!

THE TUESDAY CLUB AND BASSFIRE PRESENT A SPANKIN’ NEW NIGHT OF HIP HOP HOUSE AND BREAKS.

SUCKERPUNCH: THE LAUNCH NIGHT

FRIDAY 20TH FEBRUARY @ DQ, FITZWILLIAM ST. SHEFFIELD.

11PM TIL LATE. FIVER OTD.

VANDAL (Lot 49)
JONNY TOWNSEND (Urban Gorilla)
ANDY H (Tuesday Club)
MR. SHANKS (Bassfire)

In October 2008, Vandal returned to the UK from making his US debut at the San Francisco Love Parade, alongside the likes of Adam Freeland, DJ Mehdi, Green Velvet and Claude Von Stroke.

Vandal is currently building up to his debut artist album, and starts with the follow up to his hugely popular ‘Idiots’ single entitled ‘Captain Magic’ on LOT49, which is backed up by remixes from Worthy (Dirtybird) & Ruddi Stakker (a.k.a. Will Bailey from Twocker).

You can check out Vandal’s latest promo mix featuring his tech driven remix of ‘Black Chrome’ by Circuit Freq that hit the top 5 Beatport Breaks chart for a whole month! With this in mind it’s no wonder Vandal’s production skills are hot property on the indie circuit, highlighted by a cracking feature and review by NME.com alongside an exclusive download of his Futureheads remix.

Still hard at work in the studio, upcoming releases include a special remix of the hotly tipped indie band the Baddies and Dopamine.

And if that isn’t enough Urban Gorilla legend Jonny Townsend, DMC Finalist & Tuesday Club Veteran Andy H and new kid Mr. Shanks will be out all guns blazin’ to kick off the party SUCKERPUNCH style. KAPOW!!
